How to Get Rid of the Gray

by Zack Evar |

Your hair’s going gray and you’re not happy just letting it go, what can you do? Should you get some dye from a pharmacy? Go to a salon? Should you dye all of it? Believe it or not, there are many methods on how to get rid of the gray. As men's skincare experts, we are here to help!

Invest in shampoos

For men who aren’t really interested in dyeing their hair but would still like to get rid of the gray, there are many shampoos on the market that are designed specifically for men to reduce the gray. This shampoo basically deposits small amounts of dye over time rather than all at once, resulting in a change in color after several weeks of use.

Maintaining the results requires continued use of the shampoo. Some men may have an allergic reaction or get an irritated scalp from using it, so it’s recommended that you test a bit of the shampoo first before using it on your whole head. Hair dye

If you’re not averse to dying your hair all at once there is always boxed hair dye. While you could use a women’s hair dye, you are better off using one made specifically for men. Women’s hair dye is designed to strip hair’s natural color for a dramatic change. While men’s hair dye is designed specifically for covering gray. Men’s hair dye tends to be less harsh than women’s hair dye for this reason.

Men’s hair dye is also easier to apply. While women’s hair dye requires gloves and precise application to prevent staining around the scalp and ears, not to mention clothes and bathroom surfaces, men’s hair dye can usually be used as a shampoo. Some men’s hair color is even designed to only cover some of the gray for men who want a subtle, less obvious change.

Just like with gray reducing shampoo, you’ll need to test boxed hair dye first. Just to make sure your skin doesn’t have a reaction.

Go to the salon

If dying your own hair seems intimidating, there’s always the salon. Colorists train to know the art of matching hair colors. They also know their products and can take the guesswork out of finding the right shade of dye for you.

Finding just the right shade means more natural-looking results, so while going to a salon is more expensive and time-consuming than dyeing your hair on your own, in the end, it might be worth it.

Another advantage to getting rid of the gray at a salon that professional hair color tends to fade over time. This saves you from obvious-looking roots when your hair starts to grow out after dyeing it at home.

One of the first things to go gray for many men is their beard or stubble. A gray beard can add years to your look.
